1960-1970's
. The Emeralds didn't just ride
together, they grew up together, were neighbors, school mates and friends. You
knew who to trust and who not to. They all hung around the Mister Donuts in
Mattapan or Cleary Square in Hyde Park. Billy Wagner was one of the catalysts
behind the forming of the club and he was the first president, then Harry Vee.
The
Original Red Emeralds Boston Chapter leased an old two story blacksmith shop in
Jamaica Plain on Danforth Street. Members would keep their bikes, equipment, and
tools downstairs. The front of the building had a huge sliding door and a
regular entry door. To get to the second floor they climbed a perpendicular
staircase on the back left, which many troublemakers descended horizontally. The
second floor is where they attended meetings, played cards, or just hung out.
The second floor had a large Formica bar on the right, with bar stools as you
stepped through the door, around the corner at the far end of the bar to the
left, you entered at rather large hall, there sat several easy chairs and a
sofa, with the final touch, a huge juke box holding up the left corner wall.
Other club occupants include rat's as big as cats, which many of the original
members, remember well.
The club had it's soft side and annually
raised money during the holidays so each orphan at the Home for the Little
Wanderers could have gifts for the Christmas.
